Foldable umbrella

An umbrella is without discussion,a very suitable object for rainy days. Unlike a raincoat, an umbrella can provide a larger space deprived of rain which makes it a better shelter because it is easier to move under an umbrella. It is also ideal for warm but rainy weather. Whereas the concept of umbrella itself is a design, foldable umbrellas carry this concept to a whole new level of usefulness. This function makes it easier to carry an umbrella because it fits in your bag ,sometimes even in your pocket. Since you can always carry it with you,you can always be prepared for an unexpected rain situation. Having a small umbrella makes it easier to fit in crowded places such as public transportation. It is because of these benefits that people prefer to use foldable umbrellas rahter than the big ones.

Reading the previous paragraph, you may think that a foldable umbrella is a brilliant design. But if you try to use it in a stormy day you will see that it is nothing but useless. The mecanism that allows a foldable umbrella to fold is in fact the ablitiy of the metal bars (the ones which give the umbrella it's shape) to bend. This ablitiy makes the bars vulnerable against the wind. Because of this weakened structure the umbrella keeps folding backwards and as a result you get wet. Besides it is not very easy for corpulant people to fit under small umbrellas. So there are several conditions where a foldable umbrella is not a useful object.

remote control

The object that I have chosen is a remote control. Actually it was a big invention after the invention of the television. People want to lay on their sofas and watch TV while relaxing. Changing a channel was the most difficult action for a person who was laying down a remote control was the resolution of this problem. A remote control is a really useful device which is portable and durable.
First I will talk about the factors that producers consider such as the material. It’s made of plastic which makes it less heavier. Plastic is a material used often nowadays. It’s cheap and also hardly breakable unless there is a strong force on it. The greatest problem of this material is the bad effect on health. Plastic is common used material and considered as a danger for humanity. A product of petrolium is dangerous for people. This material is easy to produce and manufacture. This cheap material makes this device cheaper. When we buy a new TV and open the box we expect to find a remote in the box. It became the main component of a TV. It’s practical and easy to learn because the producer symbolizes the function of the buttons by numbers or small symbols. To use a remote control all we need is to look on it. We will find all instructions on in. Also the visual is important. Maybe to use buttons with different colors and different shapes will draw attention.
Now I will talk about my remote control which I use every day in my room. First of all the shape of it is really useful. It has a curvy shape which makes it easier to hold. It has a medium size so it fits in our hand. It is black which matches with the color of the TV. The wireless connection is strong so we can still use it from long distance. It works with two batteries and we can use it for a longtime without changing the batteries. It is durable because it doesn’t break easily.
After all this, this device has a default for me. The organization of buttons isn’t the way that I am used to. Generally the middle of the remote control there are buttons situated like circle. Normally right and left buttons control channels, up and down buttons control the volume. But in this remote buttons up and down do not change the volume. They only help to control the menu. Volume buttons are situated in a different place so every time I search for volume buttons. I said the shape was a good detail but also it confuses because in dark I can’t find the right position. What I meant to say is the shape is ellipse so it’s hard to find the front and the back of the remote control. We have to hold the remote in a right way because of the wireless connection.
This great invention of course has some defaults but we still glad to have it.

iphone

DESIGNED OBJECT

I especially chose iPhone as a tribute to Steve Jobs' death after our first lesson about Apple products. As usual iPhone is significantly elegant in design staying true to company's tradition. One major reason that i like this mobile phone is that you never feel disappointed once you buy it. From it's looks to it's software properties it is a superior phone comparing to others.
First of all iPhone uses the latest technology and the fastest processing systems and because of it's reliability people do not hesitate to purchase it. The quality issue is a big factor on customers' decisions. Since the debut of iPod's, world met the beauty of simplicity on designs and the easy-to-use wheel that has been standardized after it's success on market. That's why iPhone also made a huge sale from the day it was released; because people now were able to access their music from their iTunes and also communicate with their contacts. iPhone fused so many useful great stuff together, it became inevitable to ignore. Some of those great stuff i mentioned about are: 5 megapixel video/camera, application store, iPod, 3G internet availability, all-touch screen and many more. I myself bought iPhone because i was used to the previous products, so i did not have to think twice about it. The way it is so compatible with other Apple devices is making it so simple to use. The basic underwork behind the handed device is massive so the phone never falls behind the current update and never fails like most of the Apple products.
The touch screen is revolutionary and is brand new, that was not present in most of the mobile phones back when iPhone was first released. This design leaves more space for the screen and that led to fun. By fun i meant the java games that are playable on the big touch screen which is another fact that people like to have one of these. In my opinion iPhone created the concept of game-phone. It made people of all ages love games again since it is so portable and fit in our pockets.
As a conclusion we can say that iPhone is almost excellent since it has a lot of free memory space up to 32 gigabytes which is incredible and unseen in any phone before. You can reach your e-mails and paste about all of your pictures and clips from your computer. But of course i have some complains about few things. One of them is about the touch key pad which sometimes becomes useless, comparing to classic button style ones because you cannot text without seeing the screen. If it was a buttoned one you could have text without looking because the letters are placed in a standard order so you wouldn't have any problem memorizing it. The other bad thing about the screen is, it is not big enough for our fingers to move in. It becomes painful after a while when you're texting a large message and you have to send it fast. You always make mistakes and press other letters since all the letters are three milimetres wide and all the characters are on the same page. This order leads to confusion. I have a simple solution for this problem. One: making the screen larger so that characters will fit in more comfortable and users won't have any problems touching the letters without accidentally touching the unwanted neighbour letters while texting. And two: placing letters in more than one slot; instead spreading them in pages. So again the letters will receive more space in means of width and height. The second major weakness of iPhone is it's battery life which was complained by many other users around the globe. iPhone doesn't last more than one day. You have to recharge it everyday. This has some negative effect on travelers. Once you are out of home, mobile phone is the only device you can communicate with out world, so this device should stay on as long as it is needed. The fact that iPhone runs too many applications within, has a great size of screen to lighten and 24/7 internet connection decreases it's battery life span. Apple should do something about this to improve durability. Other than these two minor problems that could be fixed iPhone is one of the smartest purchases i have ever made that i could think of along side with MacBook Pro which is another Apple wonder.

Water Pump

This is a water pump.We use water pump everday in our lives. In every house in every corner water pums are popular and usefull nowadays. The aim of the water pump is taking out the water from water cans easily into glasses or storage.Water pumps enable us to transfer water without tilting water can.We don’t need to tilt or lift the can.We can easily pump the water by pressing on the water pump.I think this is a very simplified way of transferring water and drinking it easily. Moreover by this way we are gaining more time.It takes less time to pump the water then tilting the can.The negative way of the water pump is that water leaks everytime after the pumping is finished. This means the place can be wet all the time.Another bad way of water pump is its slowness in water transfer.By tilting the can water dumping can ve faster. We can spill  the water in one time into a big store can if we tilt it but by pumping it could be slower. So water pumps have both positive and negative ways but it is certain that it simplifies our life and that is the main goal of designing a water pump.

poäng armchair

Poäng armchair is a part of Poäng series. It was designed in 1972 by a Japanese furniture designer named Noboru Nakamura.

There are also other designs of Nakamura: armchairs and chairs that consist of either bent metal or bentwood frame with various types of fabric and leather options.

Poäng is sold in IKEA stores and consists of two packages; chair cushion and chair frame.
The bentwood frame of the chair is produced in Romania and made from birch which is a type of wood. It is designed to be assembled by the customer. 2 plastic stoppers are fastened at the bottom of the chair to prevent slipping. The frame withstands weights up to 170 kilograms.

The cushion is 100% cotton and made in Turkey. Removable and machine washable cover makes it easy to clean and use. The head rest is 100% polypropylene. It provides great support for the user’s neck. The hook and loop fastener enables the stability of the cushion.

Poäng is a globally known and widely used design which can be considered as esthetic and ergonomic. The ergonomics of the design results from its soft backrest that holds the head and shoulders of the user. Also, its comfort mainly resulted from the fact that the knees are positioned vertically higher than the thigh when you sit on the chair.

Poäng harmonizes smoothly with the other furniture used in the surrounding. Besides being used in classically furnished houses, it may also be preferred in modernly furnished places.

Poäng is used for different purposes in different places of the house. For instance, there are two families whom I know personally. One lives in America and uses the chair in the living room. The other family settles in Australia and the chair is used for breastfeeding purposes.

Poäng has 10-year limited warranty which covers the armchair frame but not the cushions. Some users indicated that they have been using the product for over 10 years.

The ones who sit on the chair for long times or who want to use it as a TV chair may prefer to use the design along with footstool from the Poäng series.

Poäng is both reading and working chair for me. It is very useful with an L-shaped notebook stand.

About this video

Roger Martin, a leading proponent of design thinking in business, makes the case that we can understand innovation through a new model of how businesses advance knowledge over time, and that businesses fail to innovate when they show greater concern for producing reliable (predictable and reproducible) outcomes than valid ones that actually meet objectives. Martin argues that businesses can do a better job at innovating—and advancing knowledge—if they embrace design thinking. Using examples such as Procter & Gamble, RIM (BlackBerry) and Cirque du Soleil, he examines how companies transform themselves into successful design-thinking organizations.
